SEGA showcases first gameplay for Sonic Frontiers: Release date, platforms and more
The Japanese publisher has released several installments and spin-offs in its iconic platform game franchise. Some have seen success, others are doomed to epic failure.
With these considerations in mind, fans have been cautiously optimistic about the upcoming Sonic Frontiers. It was announced last year with a cinematic teaser of the popular blue hedgehog burning in a forest, finally getting new gameplay.

Sonic Frontiers introduces the series to an all-open world formula
The first story, only one minute long, on the media's official account showcases little bits of everything. Spacious open world, sprinkled with grind tracks and fight enemies.
Most of them look promising at least, especially the enemy design and bash-based combat. However, most of the footage is from IGN's exclusive First game release, which covers four minutes of the full gameplay experience.
For one, it showcases Sonic's move set well. He can walk, run, grind, throw and jump as usual for the hero. But it also seems to have a ground pound or a kicking motion or at least something that looks like one.
Otherwise, the map is expansive and filled with rings and coins to collect, as well as towering monoliths and designated rails/splash pads. There also seem to be destructible structures.
The overarching gameplay, while not showing the battle, does show the activities around the map. Some appear active, while others are disabled or waiting to be burned. These include puzzles to solve (like changing an atatu's position or walking between pads in a pattern).
Completing them seems to unlock some collectibles whose purpose is as yet unknown. Looking at how the concept is held on 3D platforms combined, it could contribute to the advancement of the world.
Development on the game started after the flop that was Sonic Forces. This time, the blue hedgehog will arrive at an island called Starfall Islands. It is said that there are various biomes. Visually, it made comparisons to Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. However, in execution it looks more like the Bowser's Fury expansion of Super Mario 3D World.
